We have a new volunteer opportunity that we hope will appeal to those of you who like home improvement, DIY, and home repairs - a Home Safety & Earthquake Preparedness Program to offer our FCV community. Through the generosity of new partnerships and grant funding, we are able to offer this program to our Full Members!
Here's how it works:
- As a Home Safety Volunteer, you will oversee 3-5 households who have requested work.
- You will attend one training session with partner contractors and your assigned homeowners. Our partner contractors will go over a checklist for the homeowners and explain what to look for in an initial inspection.
- You will schedule a brief inspection of the homes, observe and document their safety concerns and maybe see some of your own.
- FCV will determine from the checklist, pictures and consulting with our contractors, one of two options for repair and safety-proofing of each home.
- Each home owner will receive a proposal of what work can be done. It is up to the homeowner to decide about moving forward with all recommendations, some of the work or none at all.
* There is no charge for participating in this program, basic safety items for your home (including installation), and some modest safety upgrades. FCV has partnered with Hassett Hardware’s Handyman Program to perform any work needed for safety. If work goes beyond Hassett’s generous discounts and FCV’s supplemental support, homeowner will receive their remaining cost with option of doing all, some or not performing the work. More extensive home safety repairs for income-qualified households may be referred to Rebuilding Together Peninsula for service by FCV. Please visit www.rtpeninsula.org for more information on their services. Go-bag and safety presentations (in person or zoom) are included at no charge.
